An outdoor Level 2 Tesla Wall Connector installation for a home in the Felida neighborhood of Vancouver, WA. The customer already had rooftop solar wired through the existing Square D Homeline panel, so the scope was to add a dedicated 240V circuit for the EV charger without disrupting the solar breakers.
Why mount a Wall Connector outdoors
The Tesla Wall Connector is rated for outdoor installation in exposed locations, which opens up placement options that an indoor-only charger does not. For this home, the pergola post gave us a clean mounting point visible from the driveway, with the pergola structure itself providing conduit routing from the existing panel without a single penetration through finished wall.
Outdoor mounting is also the right call when the garage is not attached, detached, or (as in this case) not the most convenient place to pull up and plug in. A weather-rated charger on a pergola post is the EV equivalent of a well-placed exterior outlet, and it pairs naturally with landscape and pergola lighting on the same structure.
Working around the existing solar system
The Square D Homeline panel already had dedicated breakers for two solar arrays plus a full set of branch circuits for the house. Adding an EV charger to a panel that was already near full required freeing up two single-pole breaker slots before the new 240V breaker could land. Two slim 15-amp breakers replaced a pair of regular breakers on existing low-draw circuits, consolidating the load without downsizing anything that mattered.
The solar system continued to operate normally after the new EV circuit was energized. The charger, when drawing, is backed partly by solar generation during daylight hours and fully by grid current when needed.
Why a dedicated 240V circuit
A Tesla Wall Connector can charge at up to 48 amps on a 60-amp circuit, adding roughly 44 miles of range per hour. On a smaller circuit it steps down automatically. For more detail on how Level 1 and Level 2 compare for daily driving, see our Level 1 vs. Level 2 EV charger guide.
240V is the only practical option for home Level 2 charging. A standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds only 3-5 miles of range per hour, which is not enough for daily driving on most EVs.
What about adding battery backup later
Customers with rooftop solar often ask about adding a battery backup (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, FranklinWH) to pair with the system. Battery backup is a larger electrical project that touches the service panel, the automatic transfer switch, and the utility interconnection agreement, so it is usually scoped as its own job on its own timeline. It is worth mentioning because it affects panel planning: if a battery is likely in the next few years, the panel and service capacity should be sized for it now rather than rebuilt later.
