Scope of Work
- Hardwired an Autel MaxiCharger on a 60-amp circuit
- Landed the breaker in the home's Eaton panel
- Mounted the charger within a few feet of the panel
- Wired for the charger's full rated output
Newman Electric installed a 60-amp EV charging circuit for a 1996 home in Vancouver, WA, feeding a hardwired Autel MaxiCharger. The homeowner did not just want a charger that works, they wanted one wired for the fastest charge the unit can deliver. That comes down to the circuit, and this one was built for full output.
Why 60 amps is the number that matters
An EV charger can be set up on different circuit sizes, and the breaker is what caps how fast it charges:
- A 60-amp breaker lets the charger pull up to a continuous 48 amps, the most a 60-amp circuit allows
- That works out to roughly 11 kilowatts, or tens of miles of range added per hour
- Wire it on a smaller circuit and the charger is electrically throttled, no matter what the car can take
So the breaker size is not a detail, it is the whole ceiling on charge speed. We sized the conductors for a continuous 48-amp load, landed the 60-amp breaker in the Eaton panel, and the charger now runs at the top of its range.
Why hardwired beats a plug at this amperage
At 48 amps continuous, hardwiring is the right call, not a plug-in cord:
- A hardwired connection has no receptacle to heat up or wear out under a sustained heavy load
- It is the configuration that unlocks the full 48-amp output in the first place
- It is a permanent, weather-free connection inside the garage
Plug-in chargers are fine at lower amperages. When you are wiring for maximum speed, hardwired is how you get there safely.
A short run keeps it clean
The charger mounted within a few feet of the panel, so the 60-amp circuit had only a short path to travel, kept in conduit from the panel to the unit. Short run, big circuit, full speed.
