Scope of Work

  • Relocated 240V range circuit 15 feet to match a new cabinet layout
  • Pulled 6/3 Romex through the crawl space from the circuit junction to the new location
  • Installed a flush-mount NEMA 14-50 outlet at the new range spot
  • Decommissioned the old 240V receptacle at the original location

A common kitchen electrical remodel request in Clark County: moving the range electrical a few feet to match a new cabinet layout. This one was in the Orchards neighborhood of Vancouver, WA, where the homeowner was reconfiguring the kitchen and switching from a gas range to a full electric range at the same time.

Why a range relocation is a real electrician job

A NEMA 14-50 outlet pulls 50 amps on a 240V circuit. That’s one of the biggest single-appliance loads in a house, which is why it can’t just be an extension cord or a patch in the old cable. The circuit needs:

  • 6-gauge copper or 4-gauge aluminum per NEC 310.16 for 50-amp continuous draw
  • A dedicated 50-amp double-pole breaker at the panel
  • A proper range receptacle (flush-mount, 14-50R) with strain relief
  • Equipment grounding conductor (6/3 Romex provides this) per 2023 NEC, not the old 3-wire range cord setup

On this job the old circuit was still in good shape, so the crew pulled a new 20-foot run of 6/3 Romex through the crawl space from the circuit junction to the new location and terminated at a flush-mount 14-50. The old receptacle at the previous location was capped and the box was closed off behind the new drywall.

Gas-to-electric conversions are becoming common

A couple of factors are driving this shift in the Vancouver area:

  1. Induction cooking has improved a lot, and many cooks prefer the responsive heat control and the easier cleanup of a glass cooktop.
  2. Utility incentives and state-level electrification goals are nudging homeowners toward all-electric kitchens.

If you’re converting from gas to electric, the kitchen side of the job usually includes:

  • New 50-amp 240V circuit from the panel (if one doesn’t already exist) landing on a NEMA 14-50 range outlet
  • Decommission of the gas line by a plumber (Newman Electric doesn’t do gas)
  • Possibly a new hood circuit if upgrading the ventilation at the same time

Kitchen remodels in an older home

Homes built in the 2000s like this one typically have a 200-amp panel with enough capacity for the conversion. Older 100-amp homes sometimes need a load calculation or a service panel replacement first, especially if there’s already a heat pump or an EV charger pulling the same service. That’s the first thing we check on the scope visit.
