Scope of Work

- Ran a short piece of EMT along the wall from the panel
- Put in a 240-volt EV charging outlet at plug-in height
This Ridgefield homeowner already had a portable Level 2 charger, so they didn’t need a charger on the wall. They needed somewhere to plug it in. We added a dedicated 50-amp, 240-volt circuit and an EV charging outlet right next to the garage panel, in a short run of EMT.
Outlet or hardwired charger?
A lot of EV owners have a portable charger that came with the car or one they bought for trips. With a 240-volt outlet, that same charger runs at Level 2 at home. When the parking spot is near the panel, it’s about as simple as it gets.
What we tell people before we install:
- An outlet is flexible. You can unplug the charger and throw it in the trunk.
- A hardwired charger has no plug, so there’s no plug connection to heat up over hours of charging.
- Either way, use a heavy-duty, EV-rated outlet, not the cheapest one on the shelf.
Our guide to Level 1 vs Level 2 charging at home shows how fast each setup charges.
Why right next to the panel
Putting the outlet next to the panel keeps the run short, just a few feet of EMT along the wall. A short run costs less, doesn’t need bigger wire for voltage drop, and the EMT protects the wire where it could get bumped.
The panel is a Square D Homeline that already had a SurgeBreaker whole-house surge protector, which covers the car’s charging electronics along with the rest of the house.
