Scope of Work

  • Ran flexible metal conduit for the entire breaker-to-charger run
  • L&I permit pulled and passed inspection

An Emporia Level 2 EV charger install for a newer home in the Hazel Dell neighborhood of Vancouver, WA. The garage panel had available space and the homeowner wanted the charger mounted right next to it, so the full install (mount, circuit, breaker, test, label) wrapped up in about 45 minutes on site.

Emporia is a good fit for this kind of house

Emporia is one of the more affordable hardwired Level 2 chargers on the market and it pairs well with a newer home for a few reasons:

  • The panel already has a main breaker rating that supports a 40 or 50-amp EV circuit without a load calculation
  • The breaker space is labeled and open, so no swapping in tandems or relocating existing circuits
  • Drywall is new enough that surface-mount flexible metal conduit looks clean against the wall

Emporia also includes energy monitoring and app control, which matters for households that want to shift charging to off-peak hours or track home energy use.

Hardwired vs plug-in

The Emporia can be installed either way. For this job we hardwired it:

  • Hardwired runs slightly cooler, is rated for higher continuous amperage, and doesn’t rely on a NEMA 14-50 outlet (which has been the subject of multiple manufacturer recalls for EV charging use)
  • Plug-in is only better when the homeowner might move the charger to another property or wants a removable unit

For a house where the owner plans to stay, hardwired is the default recommendation.

What made this a fast job

Three conditions line up on this one:

  1. Main panel in the garage, so no fishing wire through finished walls
  2. Open breaker space right next to the charger mount, so a short circuit run
  3. Newer construction, so no aluminum branch wiring, no Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel surprises, no load calc required

When those three line up, an EV charger install is a one-visit job. When they don’t (older panel, detached garage, long run through a crawlspace), it’s still doable but the labor and material both go up. A quick scope visit tells us which version of the job it is before anyone commits to a price.
