Vaulted Great Room Remodel Trim in Battle Ground, WA (Recessed Lighting + Mini-Split)

We did the trim-out on a remodel of a 2002 home in Battle Ground, WA. The big room was an open great room with a vaulted ceiling and an exposed glulam beam. It looks easy when it’s finished. It isn’t easy when you’re the one putting lights up there.

It was a full trim day: recessed lights on the high ceiling, a ductless heat pump wired outside, and the bath and laundry finished. About six and a half hours on site, a lot of it up in the air.

Why a vaulted ceiling means a scissor lift

A flat eight-foot ceiling is a ladder job. A vaulted great room isn’t. The slope and the height put the cans out of ladder reach, and standing on the top step over a concrete subfloor is how people get hurt.

So we brought in a scissor lift:

• A steady platform to set each can at the right depth and angle
• Safe reach across the whole ceiling, including up by the beam
• Faster and steadier than moving a ladder for every light

That’s why the finished ceiling looks clean. Every can’s at the same depth, and the spacing stays even all the way up the slope.

Why the mini split gets its own circuit and disconnect

Outside, the home was getting a ductless mini split heat pump. You don’t tie that outdoor unit into whatever circuit’s nearby. It gets:

1. A dedicated circuit sized to the unit’s nameplate
2. A weatherproof disconnect within sight of the unit, per NEC 440.14
3. A clean conduit and whip down to the unit so the connection’s protected and easy to service

A mini split wired right is quiet, up to code, and easy for an HVAC tech to work on without hunting for a shutoff. That’s what heat pump wiring comes down to: the right circuit and the right disconnect in the right place.

The rest of trim day

The great room’s the showpiece, but trim day is the whole house at once. Here that also meant:

• Bath and laundry cans and the exhaust fan finished
• Switches and outlets put in throughout
• Lights hung and everything tested before the flooring went in

That’s remodel work. The electrician comes back at the end and turns a roughed-in shell into a house you can live in, on a schedule that keeps the flooring crew and painters moving.
