Panel Swap Plus Dedicated Sump Pump Circuits in Kalama, WA

We replaced an old 30/60 panel on a Kalama home. While the panel was open, we added two dedicated 20-amp outlets for the sump pumps so the homeowner didn't need a second visit.

Scope of Work

  • Replaced the original 30/60 panel
  • Re-landed every existing circuit
  • Added two dedicated 20-amp outlets for the sump pumps
  • Put surge protection in the new panel

On this home in Kalama, we took out the original 30/60 panel. While it was open, we ran two dedicated 20-amp outlets for the sump pumps instead of leaving that for another trip.

Why a sump pump needs its own circuit

A sump pump runs when nobody’s watching, and it works hardest in the worst weather. If the breaker trips, you usually don’t find out until there’s water.

If the pump shares a circuit with something else:

  • A tripped breaker shuts the pump off without anyone knowing. The freezer trips the circuit, and the pump’s been off a day before anybody sees water.
  • The pump pulls a lot more power when it starts. On a shared circuit, that start-up surge is what trips the breaker.
  • Two pumps on one breaker means one problem kills both. If you have a main pump and a backup, they need separate breakers.

So each pump got its own 20-amp outlet on its own breaker. Same reason we’d put in a dedicated sump pump circuit anywhere else. The pump doesn’t use much power, but losing it costs a lot.

Doing it during the panel swap

We added the two circuits during the panel replacement, and that’s where the savings are.

The power was already off, the panel was already open, and we were putting in new breakers anyway. Adding two circuits right then takes very little extra time. Coming back in six months means another outage and paying for the setup twice.

Same with the surge protector we added at the top of the new panel. It’s a small add-on during a panel replacement and a hassle to add later.

Why the 30/60 was full

A 30/60 panel only has so many spaces for breakers. On a rural property you usually run out of spaces before you run out of power: shop circuits, well controls, outbuildings, freezers, and now sump pumps all need their own breaker.

A new panel with room to spare means the next addition is a small job, not a subpanel.

This guy! Newman Electric I cannot even tell you how much Ryan rocks. Called him Thanksgiving Eve because my range caused my whole breaker box (from the 80's) to go out. I was pretty bummed.. what an awful feeling having 20+ people coming over the next day i was freaking out. Not only did Ryan and his co worker come over and make it work. They were also awesome about it. I do not have enough gratitude to ever thank them enough. I highly recommend Newman Electric to everyone they are great and awesome.
