Scope of Work
- Pulled the melted receptacle and the burned cover plate
- Checked the box and wires for heat damage
- Put in a new receptacle and plate
An A/C unit in this Vancouver home was plugged into a regular wall outlet, and the outlet melted. When we pulled it, the receptacle was melted with burned contacts, and the cover plate and the drywall around the box had soot on them.
Why an A/C melts an outlet
An air conditioner pulls a lot of current for hours at a time. A good, tight connection handles that fine. A weak one heats up.
The heat comes from a bad connection, not from the A/C itself:
- A backstabbed wire (pushed into the hole in the back instead of wrapped around the screw) only touches a small spot
- A worn-out receptacle doesn’t grip the plug blades tight anymore
- A loose terminal screw works itself free after years of heating up and cooling down
Put a heavy load on any of those for hours and it gets hot. The heat makes the connection worse, and eventually the plastic melts. Our post on a burning smell at an outlet covers the warning signs you get first.
The repair
We shut the power off at the outdoor Square D Homeline panel, then:
- Pulled the melted receptacle and the burned plate
- Checked the box and the wires for heat damage
- Cut back any heat-damaged wire to clean copper
- Put in a new receptacle with the wires on the screws, and a new plate
If the heat damage goes further up the cable, we replace that section back to the next box. That’s why we check before we close it up.
If your A/C is on a regular outlet
A small A/C unit on a 15-amp outlet is common, and it’s fine as long as the outlet’s in good shape and nothing else big is on that circuit. A bigger unit, or one that keeps tripping the breaker, needs a dedicated circuit.
If the cover plate feels warm, you smell something burning, or the plug feels loose in the outlet, unplug it and call us at 360-828-7143. We handle this kind of electrical repair in Vancouver, or you can book a service call online.

What customers say about our troubleshooting work
Oh my gosh! I called Newman Electric about power to our bathroom outlets not working. They were in our neighborhood, North Image, and said we will be there in 15 MINUTES!! They diagnosed the problem (an outside CGFI outlet was tripped when our siding was washed) and put everything back together. We had forgotten about the outside CGFI and didn't know it was part of the bathroom wiring. They didn't charge us anything! We are so excited to share that Ryan and Anthony are the BEST! Thanks Newman Electric! You guys rock!
This guy! Newman Electric I cannot even tell you how much Ryan rocks. Called him Thanksgiving Eve because my range caused my whole breaker box (from the 80's) to go out. I was pretty bummed.. what an awful feeling having 20+ people coming over the next day i was freaking out. Not only did Ryan and his co worker come over and make it work. They were also awesome about it. I do not have enough gratitude to ever thank them enough. I highly recommend Newman Electric to everyone they are great and awesome.
