Hot Tub Wiring in Brush Prairie, WA (Spa Circuit + Powered Cover)

We wired a new hot tub at a Brush Prairie home: a dedicated 240-volt GFCI circuit run to the spa pack in liquidtight, plus a separate 15-amp circuit for the powered cover. Both went into a panel that already had a generator interlock.

Scope of Work

  • Wired a new hot tub on a 240-volt GFCI circuit
  • Ran the power to the spa pack in liquidtight
  • Added a separate 15-amp circuit for the powered cover
  • Put both circuits in the home's existing panel

We wired a new hot tub at a home in Brush Prairie, WA. The homeowner asked for two things up front: power the spa, and add a dedicated circuit for the powered cover. Both got their own breaker in the panel, wired to the code for water and electricity in the same backyard.

Why a hot tub is more than another 240 circuit

A spa sits outside, holds a few hundred gallons of water, and people sit in it. NEC Article 680 treats it that way, and so do we:

  • GFCI protection on the spa circuit, so any leak to ground trips it right away
  • A disconnect within sight of the tub, so it can be shut off before anyone works on the pump
  • Liquidtight conduit into the spa pack, because the run is out in the weather

We ran the power in liquidtight along the base of the cedar cabinet and into the spa pack, and put it on the right breaker for the tub’s nameplate. GFCI, a disconnect in sight and weatherproof conduit are why a hot tub is an electrician’s job, not a weekend project.

The cover gets its own circuit

This tub has a motorized cover, and the homeowner wanted it wired on its own instead of sharing power with the spa. So it got a dedicated 15-amp circuit:

  1. The cover motor runs separately from the spa pack
  2. If one trips or gets worked on, the other keeps running
  3. The panel directory’s clear: one line for the hot tub, one for the cover

It’s a small add, and it makes the system easier to live with and easier to troubleshoot later.

A panel ready for it

This home’s panel was in good shape for the addition. It already had a generator interlock for backup power, and enough room for the spa and cover circuits. On a rural Brush Prairie property where the power can go out in a winter storm, having the generator side done already is smart. And adding a big load like a hot tub is the time to make sure the panel can carry it. If you’re not sure about yours, our guide to whether your panel can carry it is a good place to start.
