Scope of Work

  • Installed a Tesla Wall Connector on the exterior garage wall
  • Pulled a new 60-amp dedicated 240V circuit from the main panel
  • Sealed the exterior wall penetration to weather-rated standards
  • Wired for up to 48-amp continuous charging output

An exterior-mount Tesla Wall Connector install in the Minnehaha neighborhood of Vancouver, WA. The homeowner uses the garage for a home gym and wanted to charge the Tesla without opening the garage door, so we mounted the charger on the driveway side of the garage wall and fed it through from the panel inside.

Exterior vs interior mounts

Inside-the-garage is the default for EV charger installs because it keeps the equipment out of the weather. But there are several reasons to mount outside:

  • Garage is used for storage, a gym, or a shop and you don’t want to maneuver around the cable every day
  • Detached garage with a driveway apron where running the charger to the main house is cheaper than running power all the way to the far garage
  • Two vehicles where the second car parks on the driveway and you want a closer charger
  • Cold climate where you prefer to plug in with the vehicle outside (no warm-garage condensation concerns)

Tesla Wall Connectors are NEMA 3R-rated for outdoor use, so mounting exterior is fully code-compliant as long as the penetration through the wall is weather-sealed.

The Tesla Wall Connector vs other Level 2 chargers

The Gen 3 Wall Connector is Tesla-native: it uses the NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector that Teslas accept without an adapter. Advantages on this job:

  • 48-amp output on a 60-amp circuit for the fastest Level 2 home charging available
  • Wi-Fi connected for monitoring and firmware updates
  • Sleek aesthetic that works fine in a driveway-facing mount
  • Supports up to 4 chargers sharing a single circuit with load balancing (useful if a second Tesla joins the household)

For households with non-Tesla EVs (or a mix), Tesla sells the same unit with a J1772 adapter, or we install a J1772-native charger like Wallbox, ChargePoint, or Emporia.

What makes an exterior install take longer

This job ran about 3.5 hours because of the exterior mount. Compared to a typical panel-adjacent indoor install (under an hour), the exterior version adds:

  • Drilling a weather-rated penetration through the garage wall and routing 6/3 Romex through it
  • Transitioning from Romex inside to an outdoor-rated conduit and junction on the exterior
  • Weather-sealing the penetration with proper flashing and sealant. Skipping this step looks fine for a year, then results in water intrusion, rot, and eventually a dead charger
  • Commissioning the charger with a test charge session to confirm the full 48-amp output

Doing it right is what separates a permitted install from a handyman job. Every Newman Electric EV charger install is pulled under an L&I or City of Vancouver permit depending on jurisdiction.
