EVIQO Charger Across the Garage From the Panel in Vancouver, WA

The panel was on one side of this Vancouver garage and the car parks on the other. We ran the circuit in EMT across the ceiling, past the garage door opener, and hardwired an EVIQO Level 2 charger on the far wall.

Hardwired EVIQO Level 2 EV charger mounted on a garage wall in Vancouver WA with its charging cable coiled on a holster, fed by EMT conduit down the wall and a short flexible metal whip into the bottom of the unit

Scope of Work

  • Added a dedicated 240-volt circuit at the panel
  • Ran EMT across the garage ceiling, clear of the door opener and track
  • Brought the conduit down the far wall to the charger
  • Hardwired the EVIQO charger with a short piece of flex
  • Mounted the cable holster next to the charger

The panel in this Vancouver garage is on the narrow side next to a cabinet, and the car parks on the opposite wall. The homeowner sent us photos with the route drawn in red across the ceiling. We ran it that way in EMT conduit and hardwired an EVIQO Level 2 charger where the cable reaches the charge port.

Why not put the charger next to the panel

The cheapest install puts the charger right next to the panel, and when the parking works, that’s what we recommend. Here it didn’t. A charger by the panel would mean a cord across the garage floor or backing the car in every night.

Putting the charger where the car parks means a longer run, but you only pay for it once. Our guide to choosing a home charger and where it goes covers that choice.

Why EMT across the ceiling

Cable stapled across a garage ceiling is legal in some spots and a bad idea in most. EMT is:

  • Protected, which matters near the garage door track and opener
  • Clean looking, with straight runs and straps
  • Easy to rewire if the next car needs a bigger circuit

At the charger, the EMT comes down the wall and switches to a short piece of flex into the bottom of the unit. That gives a little slack for mounting and service.

Hardwired, not plugged in

The EVIQO is hardwired on a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized for it, not plugged into a NEMA 14-50. A hardwired charger doesn’t have a plug that can heat up over hours of charging. The cable hangs on its holster next to the unit, off the floor.
