Chandelier Hung at an 18-Foot Ceiling in Salmon Creek, Vancouver, WA

We hung a big wagon-wheel chandelier over the stairwell landing of a Salmon Creek home, 18 feet up, using the existing box and without scaffolding the whole entry.

Scope of Work

  • Hung the homeowner's wagon-wheel chandelier on an 18-foot ceiling
  • Used the existing box over the open stairwell landing
  • Set the chain and canopy so it hangs level and at the right height

Hanging the chandelier was the easy part. In this Salmon Creek home, it went over an open stairwell landing on an 18-foot ceiling. That turns a quick swap into a job about getting up there, holding the weight, and getting the height right the first time.

Why an 18-foot ceiling changes things

At eight feet you work off a step ladder and adjust as you go. At eighteen feet over a stairwell, you can’t:

  • There’s no floor under the fixture. The stair opening means a regular ladder won’t work, so we plan how we’re getting up there before we open the box.
  • Every trip takes a while. Forget a part and it’s a climb all the way down and back up. We put the chandelier together on the ground and take it up in one piece.
  • You get one try at the height. Changing the chain length after the canopy’s up means going back up, so we figure out the drop before it leaves the floor.

The box matters more than the chandelier

A chandelier this size hangs off that ceiling box for the next twenty years, so the box has to be right. It has to be rated for the chandelier’s actual weight, and on a sloped or stairwell ceiling it has to handle the angle too.

We check that before anything goes up. If the existing support isn’t rated for what the homeowner bought, we fix that first instead of finding out with the chandelier already up there. How fast a light fixture installation goes mostly comes down to the first ten minutes at the box.

Where it hangs

There’s no rule for how low a stairwell chandelier should hang. It has to clear the landing rail, look right from the floor below, and not sit so high it disappears. We hung this one in the middle of the open space so it looks right from the entry, the landing and the stairs.

Looking straight up from the landing. It's the only angle that shows how high it is.
