Two Phases of Remodel Electrical

Rough-In and Finish

Remodel electrical work happens in two phases that match the construction schedule. Newman Electric shows up for both, on time, and coordinated with your GC.

Phase 1: Rough-In

Before drywall goes up. This is when all the wiring gets run through the walls, ceiling, and floor.

  • - Run Romex to all new outlet, switch, and fixture locations
  • - Install electrical boxes for outlets, switches, and recessed lights
  • - Run dedicated circuits for kitchen appliances and bathrooms
  • - Install recessed light housings and ceiling fan boxes
  • - Run low-voltage wiring for data, TV, and speakers
  • - Pass the rough-in inspection before drywall closes the walls

Phase 2: Finish

After drywall, paint, and trim. This is when all the visible components get installed.

  • - Install outlets, switches, and cover plates
  • - Hang light fixtures, chandeliers, and pendants
  • - Install recessed light trims and LED modules
  • - Wire and mount ceiling fans
  • - Connect appliances (range, dishwasher, disposal)
  • - Final testing, labeling, and inspection

Permits and inspections. Remodel electrical work in Vancouver, WA requires an electrical permit. Newman Electric pulls the permit, shows up for both the rough-in and final inspections, and makes sure everything passes. We've been through this process hundreds of times.

Code & Permits

Remodel Electrical Code in Vancouver, WA

When you remodel, any new or modified circuits must meet the current NEC. Washington state follows the 2023 NEC under WAC 296-46B. Newman Electric makes sure your remodel wiring passes inspection the first time.

  • AFCI Protection (NEC 210.12)

All 120-volt, 15-amp and 20-amp circuits in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and hallways must have arc-fault circuit interrupter protection. When Newman Electric adds or modifies circuits in these rooms during a remodel, we install AFCI breakers.

  • GFCI Protection (NEC 210.8(A))

Any new or replaced outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, and outdoors must have GFCI protection. During a kitchen or bathroom remodel, all countertop and wet-area outlets get GFCI protection. Newman Electric installs and tests every one.

  • Tamper-Resistant Receptacles (NEC 406.12)

All new 15-amp and 20-amp outlets installed during a remodel must be tamper-resistant. This applies to every room. Newman Electric installs tamper-resistant outlets as standard on all remodel work.

  • Cable Support (NEC 334.30)

Romex cable must be supported within 12 inches of every box and every 4.5 feet along its run. During rough-in, Newman Electric staples every cable properly so it passes inspection and stays secure behind the drywall for decades.

Common Questions

Remodel Electrician FAQs

How much does remodel electrical work cost in Vancouver WA?

It depends on the scope. A bathroom remodel with a couple of new circuits and fixture relocations is at the low end. A full kitchen gut-reno with 8 to 12 new circuits, recessed lighting, and appliance hookups costs more. A whole-home remodel with a panel upgrade is at the top. Newman Electric gives free estimates. We walk the project with you or your GC and give you a number.

Do I need a permit for remodel electrical work in Vancouver WA?

Yes. Adding new circuits, relocating outlets, and running new wiring all require an electrical permit. Newman Electric pulls the permit through Washington L&I or the City of Vancouver, shows up for both the rough-in and final inspections, and makes sure everything passes.

When does the electrician need to be on-site during a remodel?

There are two visits. The rough-in happens after framing and before drywall. This is when all the wiring gets run through the walls. The finish happens after paint and trim, when outlets, switches, and fixtures get installed. Newman Electric coordinates both visits with your GC's schedule.

Can Newman Electric work with my general contractor?

Yes. Newman Electric works alongside general contractors on remodels regularly. Ryan coordinates scheduling so the rough-in and finish phases line up with the construction timeline. We show up when we say we will and we don't hold up the project.

Does old wiring need to be brought up to code during a remodel?

Any new or modified circuits must meet current code. Existing wiring that isn't touched can remain as-is in most cases. But if the remodel opens up walls and we find unsafe wiring (aluminum, knob-and-tube, or damaged Romex), Newman Electric will flag it and give you options.

How many circuits does a kitchen remodel need?

A modern kitchen needs at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for countertop outlets, plus dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, and range. That's 7 circuits minimum. Undercab lighting, recessed cans, and above-sink fixtures add more. Newman Electric plans the circuit layout during the estimate.
